There were big smiles all round last Thursday when the winners for our major raffle were drawn at the school assembly. Congratulations to those lucky people and many, many thanks to all the students and families who sold tickets.
Today around one million students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 will take part in the National Assessment Program – literacy and numeracy (NAPLAN) assessments for 2015. I would really like to quote ACARA’s Chief Executive Officer, Robert Randall, who states that we all need to place NAPLAN into context for our children.
Mr Randall says. “NAPLAN is not high-stakes testing; it amounts to less than four hours, four times in a student’s life over ten years of schooling”.
It does not take into account if a child is well, had a bad night or doesn't like tests. It also does not test the many other wonderful things that our children do, including sport, dance, drama, painting, creative and imaginative play and social and emotional growth.
Our children are precious, we need to value everything they do because that makes them the wonderful little people that they are. NAPLAN is only one very small part of our total assessments and that's what we need to remember.
This year we will be having "Circus" as our theme for our concert performance at the end of the year. As a lead up we will be teaching circus skills to the students and they will be participating in a circus challenge.
Circus challenge is a fun, engaging and hands-on experience for schools. Their aim is to get the students up and actively involved in physical and creative activities through performance and workshops. The circus challenge education program focuses on physical education, performing arts and team building.
The presenters come from a variety of backgrounds including circus, physical theatre, teachers, actors and street performers. There are no clowns, animals or canvas tents.
Children will be attending an hour session with the presenters over the Wednesday 27 and Thursday 28 May.
The cost for the hour session is $10 and although this is expensive, particularly if you have more then one child, this will be the only performance that will be offered to the students this year.
Following is the link to the Circus Challenge website to spike your interest even further.
